Programs

San Francisco State's Program in Visual Impairments includes coursework related to visual impairments (VI), special education (SPED), and literacy and math instruction (E ED). All VI and SPED classes are offered through synchronous instruction using the Zoom video conference platform. For distance students, the two E ED classes can be taken elsewhere via pre-approved course substitution. Students also attend face-to-face Labs once per semester (1-2 days depending on the semester), with housing provided at the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind in downtown SF. The VI program supports working students and intern credentialed teachers by offering evening classes on Zoom. Students typically take 2-3 classes per semester and can finish the program in five semesters including two summers (two of the summer classes are each one week of face-to-face coursework). Our program also welcomes returning teachers who are credentialed in other areas and would like to add VI to their expertise.
