Programs
San Francisco State's Program in Visual Impairments includes coursework related to visual impairments (VI), special education (SPED), and literacy and math instruction (E ED). All classes are offered through synchronous (live) instruction on Zoom. Students also attend a face-to-face Lab Weekend once per semester, with housing provided at the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind in downtown SF. The VI program supports working students and intern credentialed teachers by offering all evening classes. Students typically take two to three classes per semester and can finish the program in five semesters including two summers (two of the summer classes each require one week of face-to-face learning). Our program welcomes returning teachers who hold credentials in other areas and would like to add VI to their expertise.
All students are encouraged to become dual credentialed and apply for the orientation and mobility (O&M) program after completing their VI credential.
